A non-binary person identifies outside the gender binary.
"When I was a child I struggled to fit in with the girls in my class and felt much happier with the boys. I dressed like them, I acted like them, I talked like them.
As I got older, I tried to make myself more feminine (mostly out of fear of being bullied) but I never felt comfortable.
It took me a long time to find and accept who I actually am but now I have, I’ve never been happier. The people who matter to me don’t care how I identify. It doesn’t change who I am, just how I feel.
I’ve always been confident that the people around me would accept who I am but it was still a wonderful feeling when I tested that assumption and was proved right. The world still isn’t ready for people who exist outside of the gender binary but we’re getting closer and closer every day."
Over the pandemic, we started Project Beanie, a collection of 20+ beanies representing LGBTQIA+ identities. These beanies are modelled by our followers, and highlight the voices in our family. We hope you resonate with their stories!
